Shot entirely on location in Vermont by director Jay Craven, the feature film Stranger in the Kingdom tells the story of three newcomers to town, the Reverend Walter Andrews (Ernie Hudson), his teenage son Nat (Sean Nelson), and Claire LaRiviere (Jordan Bayne), a mysterious young woman from French Canada. The protagonists meet up with the locals, many of whom scorn the black minister in their all-white Kingdom. These include mainly the Kinneson Clan, who run the gamut from the kinetic and frisky Charlie Kinneson (David Lansbury), an attorney, and his kid brother Jim (Orphan Yersel), to his crazy outlaw uncle, Resolved Kinneson (Bill Raymond) along with his Bible-thumping cousin, Elijah Kinneson (Tom Aldredge).

Claire, half-waif, half gypsy, comes to town under false pretenses since Resolved has sent Charlie's photo when advertising for a "housekeeper." Unable to put up with Resolved's constant pranks and threats, she takes refuge at the parsonage. This upsets the town even more - a wifeless black preacher and teenage son harboring a young woman whose sexiness has not gone unnoticed. The town busybody, played by Renée Estevez, leads the opposition to the presence of Claire. It also unnerves Charlie's putative fiancee, Athena Allen (Jean Louisa Kelly). When Claire disappears and is later found - murdered - the Reverend stands accused. In a thoroughly compelling trial scene, featuring Charlie matched against Montpelier prosecutor Sigurd Moulton (Martin Sheen), we find out who done it.
